Part 1: Real People Tell How Smart Meters Made Them Sick

Sensitivity to radiation is not always easy to diagnose. As the symptoms offer mirror ‘general malaise’, some people go years and travel from health professional to health professional trying to find an answer as to why they don’t feel as well as they should.

Fatigue, headaches, dizziness, ringing in the ears, sleep abnormalities, heart palpitations, hyperactivity and skin rashes/facial flushing are just some of the common symptoms associated with exposure to radiation.

Smart Meter radiation is among the biggest culprits when it comes to people experiencing symptoms to radiation. The constant pulsing on and off, along with the high volume of radiation emitted, leaves some people virtually incapacitated. It’s no wonder many people react so strongly to radiation given off by Smart Meter’s, as many EMF experts say having a Smart Meter on the side of your home is equivalent to having a mini cell tower on the side of your home.

Real people in the USA tell the EMF Safety Network how their Smart Meter made them sick:

1.“I have been cynical towards people who worry about smart meters for a couple years, even was an early adopter nearly 5 years ago. The last year I have been experiencing a chronic sore throat that my doctors can’t explain, my kids are developing learning disabilities, among other strange health issues. The more I read, the more I’m concerned about the microwave radiation they give off.”

2.“The first ones installed on the side of my apartment building were just steps away from my apartment. I had lived in this apartment for 5 years with no problems. Suddenly I started having terrible problems sleeping. I tried everything I could think of and finally went to my doctor who gave me sleeping pills. For over a year I needed a pill every night, sometimes a half worked, but only for a few hours and soon I would be using the second half.

On Thursday, 4 days ago, newer and stronger meters we put in to replace the ones installed a little over a year ago. Now I cannot sleep, even with the sleeping pill and I am feeling so fatigued and muddle-brained that I can barely think straight and even have trouble standing up straight. I have literally done nothing since they have been put in and feel achy all over and disoriented, slightly dizzy.”

3. “My family recently moved into a new home which has 4 smart meters, we had wifi also initially. I began feeling ill: symptoms included a sensation of electricity coursing through my body, headaches, my blood pressure soared, the sensation of my brain feeling like it was being squeezed, and a sensation of burning on my skin and eyes. I could not find relief anywhere in my home.”

4.“Hello, I live in an upstairs apartment, in Turlock, CA. I have been feeling sick since they installed 16 smart meters on a panel 6 feet away from my building. I have developed respiratory problems and insomnia and anxiety and pressure in my head. They have checked me for physical problems and Dr. says there is nothing wrong with me and they keep prescribing me anxiety meds to help me sleep at night that are messing with my heart and my head.”

Radiation sickness has been documented and is acknowledged by the established medical community. Smart Meter radiation is no different than other types of radiation and should be treated as the potential health hazard it is.

Evidence EMFs Harmful to the Heart

The heart is electrical in nature, as is the brain.

There is new evidence that points to the heart being drastically affected by electromagnetic frequencies, particularly wireless frequencies, also known as microwave radiation.

Irregular heart beat, racing heart, fluttering and palpitations have all been observed in test subjects when exposed to EMFs.

The Soviets were the first to recognize these adverse affects of microwave radiation on the heart and recommended screening workers who were to work with microwave radiation as a way of protecting those whose hearts were already taxed. In a study published in 1970, the Soviets found there to be cardiovascular changes among those exposed to EMFs and state:

In the interest of occupational hygiene, many Soviet investigators (and at least one U.S. researcher) have recommended that cardiovascular abnormalities be used as screening criteria to exclude people from occupations involving radio-frequency exposures.

As EMF Researcher Dr. Magda Havas explains:

“Some people who are electrically sensitive complain that they have a rapid or irregular heart beat and feel chest pressure or pain.  We conducted a “proof of concept” study to determine if we could measure heart rate changes caused by microwave radiation with real-time monitoring.  We found that some individuals developed a rapid or an irregular heart beat when exposed to pulsed microwaves (from a cordless phone base station) at levels considered safe by the WHO, FCC, and Health Canada.

Irregular heartbeat, racing and fluttering hearts as well as heart palpitations have all been linked to exposure to EMFs, with some of the first modern cases being witnessed among school children exposed to wireless internet.

Researcher Dr. Magda Havas goes on to say:

“During the past year I have heard stories that children who attend schools with WiFi are complaining of a racing heart while in school.  Two of these students in the Barrie area (Canada) were given heart monitors to wear and one young girl was scheduled for heart surgery because her cardiologist couldn’t figure out what was wrong.  Her parents postponed the operation, removed the WiFi in their home, and her symptoms did not return during the summer when she wasn’t attending school.”

These findings shed new light on the use of wireless around those with cardiovascular irregularities, as well as the real ‘stress’ behind what are diagnosed as panic attacks.

Male Breast Cancer Linked to EMF Exposure

Dr. Samuel Milham is a published author of many articles on the dangers of electromagnetic field exposure, as well as the author of the book “Dirty Electricity: Electrfication and the Diseases of Civilization”. His articles have appeared in countless medical journals and he has served as an expert witness in several court cases related to EMFs.

One of the cases for which Dr. Milham’s legal counsel was sought was for a case involving a cluster of Male Breast Cancer within one office.

According to statistics, Male Breast Cancer has been on the rise in western countries. While many alternative health advocates cite high estrogen levels found in men as the main culprit, Dr. Milham found otherwise.

Dr, Milhan’s findings were published in 2004 in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine.

In his published article he writes,

“Three men who worked in a basement office on a large municipal office building in the southwest US have been diagnosed with breast cancer in the last ten years. The building was opened in 1985 and two of the men began working there that year.  From the building’s opening, problems with vibrating computer screens were reported in this office. This led to the identification of an adjacent electrical switchgear room as the source of magnetic fields as high as 92 mG (milliguass) measured in this office. Most offices will have magnetic fields below 3 mG. The men recognized that it was unusual that three of them would develop the same rare disease and associated their disease with the office electrical environment. They sought legal counsel and I was retained as an expert witness.”

The article goes on to cite 15 epidemiological studies showing that Male Breast Cancer has been linked to exposure to high electromagnetic fields as far back as 1991.

The case of the cluster of Male Breast Cancer that Dr. Milham was called to be a witness on clearly showed an disproportionate incidence of this type of cancer in this office. The cases of Male Breast Cancer in the office were 100-fold above the norm.

Many office buildings have first floor or basement electrical rooms. The surrounding spaces will have higher than normal levels of electromagnetic fields. If someone works in an office near one of these electrical rooms, it is prudent to inform the company of the potential dangers in the hopes they will relocate these offices or look into clearing these spaces.

Study Says ‘Diseases of Civilization’ Caused By EMFs

We are constantly reminded that the myriad of degenerative diseases that currently plaque humanity did not exist among indigenous peoples, nor were many of our own distant relatives affected by these diseases. We have all heard stories of earlier generations seemingly living out their lives and then simply dying at a ripe old age. The epidemics of cancer, diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, and even suicides seem to be an epidemic for modern man.

Processed foods, pesticides, chemical toxins, lack of direct sunlight exposure, sedentary lifestyle, stress and lack of quality sleep have all been attributed to the rise in degenerative disease. Even Sick Building Syndrome has been implemented as one of the causes of the rise in illness.

One EMF Researcher, Samuel Milham, MD, says we know need to add exposure to electromagnetic fields to that list.

Dr. Milham has been studying the effects of EMF fields on health for several decades. In September 2009, Dr. Milham published an article in the Journal of Medical Hypotheses in which he compared deaths in areas of 1940′s America that were ‘electrified’ versus areas of the US that were not yet ‘electrified’.

The data he collected was very clear. As renowned EMF Researcher Dr. Magda Havas, PhD, wrote in an article summing up Dr. Milham’s research:

“In states with 96% or more electrification, and hence little difference in electrification between rural and urban regions, there was no consistent pattern and little difference in the rural/urban death rate…However,  in states with less than 60% electrification, and most of that in urban centers, the death rate was significantly higher in urban areas than in rural areas…Similar trends were reported for deaths attributed to cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and suicide.”

Dr. Milham’s data showed that in urban areas where people were living in homes that were powered by electricity and using electrical appliances, the death rates for various illnesses increased dramatically in comparison to their rural counterparts in the same vicinity.

Those percentages were as followed:

  • coronary disease up 33.7
  • all cancers up 49.2%
  • diabetes up 66%.
  • suicide up 29.5%

However, the percentages of deaths by various diseases stayed the same in both urban and rural areas that had both been ‘electrified’.

Dr. MIlham summarized his own findings in this statement:

“I hypothesize that the 20th century epidemic of the so called diseases of civilization including cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and suicide was caused by electrification not by lifestyle. A large proportion of these diseases may therefore be preventable.”

Disturbed Sleep? Swedish Study Says EMFs To Blame

According to a recent survey, 60 million Americans can’t get to sleep at night. Worry, pressure, and stress are always cited as the main culprits and relaxation techniques are always offered as a remedy. However, a study conducted in Sweden and published in the Journal of Sleep Research found that it might not be all in your head.

This study, conducted by Professor Åkerstedt Torbjörn of Sweden, found that common electromagnetic frequencies greatly affect the normal human sleep cycle. The Study enlisted 18 healthy subjects and monitored their normal sleep cycle. Then, the subjects were exposed to a continuous 50 HZ EMF Field during the night and there sleep cycle was monitored again.

The researchers found a drastic change in the subject’s sleep. Exposure to an EMF Field during sleep resulted in a reduction of:

  • Total sleep time
  • Sleep efficiency
  • Depth of sleep
  • Slow Wave Sleep

Slow Wave Sleep is the deep sleep that is not characterized by Rapid Eye Movement. Studies have found that Slow Wave Sleep is the time when the brain processes new memories from the day as well as recovers from its daily activities. Impaired Slow Wave Sleep has been found to lessen overall performance of tasks.

In addition, Growth Hormone secretion is always highest during the Slow Wave Sleep Phase, indicating this Phase is linked with body repair.

In Europe, where this study was conducted, 50 Hz is the main frequency used in their power supply. In America as well as Asia, 60 Hz is the main frequency used. This means the power lines, transformer boxes, electrical outlets, breaker boxes, everyday appliances, etc., run on either a 50 Hz or 60 Hz frequency.

The study concluded that:

A 50-Hz electromagnetic field impairs sleep.”

Exposure to RF Radiation Induces Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is on the rise and, according to a study out of the Department of Biophysics at Gaza University in Turkey, diet and lack of iodine are not the only culprits.

It seems that modulating Radiofrequency Fields (the exact types which are emitted by cell phones, cell towers, cordless phones, etc.) have a detrimental effect on the Thyroid Gland.

When exposed to these frequencies, the Thyroid Gland undergoes several changes. First, the Gland’s cells experience a high occurrence of death, also called apoptosis. Apoptosis is a type of programmed cell death that allows cells to self-destruct if they are becoming abnormal.

The study also found that exposure to Radiofrequency Fields (RF Radiation ) lowered the Thyroid Gland’s output of its hormones. With less Thryoid Hormone, the body’s metabolism will slow, resulting in potential weight gain, fatigue, hair loss, irritability and insomnia. Lower output of Thyroid Hormone is diagnosed as Hypothyroidism.

In addition to secreting less of its own Hormones, the Thyroid Glands exposed to the RF Radiation also increased in size, called hypothyrophy. Enlargement of any Gland is indication of a Gland under duress,

The results of the study were:

“Morphological analyses revealed hypothyrophy of the gland in the 900 MHz RF exposure group. The results indicated that thyroid hormone secretion was inhibited by the RF radiation”.

The study concluded that:

“The overall findings indicated that whole body exposure to pulse-modulated RF radiation that is similar to that emitted by global system for mobile communications (GSM) mobile phones can cause pathological changes in the thyroid gland by altering the gland structure and enhancing…pathways of apoptosis.”

The Thyroid Gland is know to absorb high amounts of radiation. This we know due to nuclear fall-out. The Gland relies on healthy radiation emitted naturally from the earth and the sun for function.  Much like exposure to nuclear radiation,  RF Radiation will be absorbed by the Gland in place of healthy radiations and will work to inhibit the Gland’s function.

The study also went on to mention the global rise in Thyroid Cancer:

“Diagnoses of cancer in this gland in the neck are increasing about 6% a year, faster than cancers found anywhere else, according to one National Cancer Institute analysis.”

In summary:

“Pulse modulated 900 MHz radiation induces hypothyroidism and apoptosis in thyroid cells.”

Part 2: Experts Voice Their Views on Risks of EMFs

Top scientists from around the world share their concerns about EMF pollution and the potential health risks involved from exposure.

“Non-ionizing radiation (NIR) absorption by the population increased many times in the last few decades. The health effects of this will show a dramatic impact in the near future. Therefore effective precautionary procedures should urgently be adopted aiming to reduce NIR exposure and to reduce its health risks, in line with the IARC 2002 and 2011 recommendations that NIR is a possible human carcinogen”.

Alvaro Augusto de Salles, PhD., Professor, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul – UFRGS, Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil.

“Our studies show that exposure to electromagnetic fields with intensity lower than the ICNIRP exposure guidelines can produce biological effects. Thus, on a precautionary basis, before we understand the detailed mechanisms, we should adopt protective standards for the ubiquitous and increasing electromagnetic fields in occupational and public environments.”

Dr. Wenjun Sun, Director of Institute of Environmental Medicine, Bioelectromagnetics Key Laboratory, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Hangzhou, China.

“Our research finds that periodic, pulsed electromagnetic fields used for wireless communication reduce vegetative bioregulation activity.  Continued exposure to WiFi in Germany has deleterious effects on the cardiovascular system.  “We must reduce the spread and utilization of these systems.”

Lebrecht von Klitzing, PhD. Medical Physicist, Institute of Environmental Physics, DE 36466 Wiesenthal, Germany

“Wireless technology has driven most new high-tech products and has been a key factor in everyday domestic and commercial life. Still no serious efforts have been made by authorities to look seriously without bias at the health effects especially for heavy users, children, and pregnant women. Our research points out the necessity for precautionary measures and new safety limits given the complexity of the signals (with modulation and pulses) unlike any other radiation on earth.”

Lukas H. Margaritas, Professor emeritus of Cell Biology and Radiobiology, Coordinator, Radiation Research Program THALIS Dept of Cell Biology and Biophysics, Faculty of Biology. NATIONAL AND KAPODISTRIAN UNIVERSITY OF ATHENS, Greece

“The debate about the effect of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) on human health is a growing concern of the 21st century. On the basis of scientific evidence, there is no question that EMF emissions from several devices like cell phones, cellular antennas, and microwave ovens, have a causative effect on the brain and reproductive organs. “

Dr. Kavindra Kesari, MBA, PhD., Resident scientist, School of Environmental Science, University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio Finland; Assistant Professor, Professor, Jaipur National University, India

Part 1: Experts Voice Their Views on Risks of EMFs

“Electromagnetic fields from power and telecommunications systems, as they are present in our everyday environment, have biological and human health impacts that have not been officially acknowledged. The effects of these fields have simply not been taken seriously enough.”

Paul Héroux, PhD, Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Occupational Health McGill University Medicine, Montreal Canada,

“The harmful effects of electromagnetic fields, regardless of their frequencies, are now scientifically settled. Pregnant women (the fetus) and children and adolescents are particularly vulnerable. WHO has recognized the possibly carcinogenic effects of electromagnetic fields; its policy program should now be urgently extended to the recognition of electrohypersensitivity as a full affection entering the nosologic framework of Idiopathic Environmental Intolerance. This is what the international congress held on the 18th of May, 2015 at the Royal Belgian Academy of Medicine proposes.”

Dominique Belpomme, MD, MPH, Professor in Oncology, Paris V Descartes University, European Cancer & Environment Research institute, Executive Director.

“Evidence of health hazard is here since IARC 2011. It surely was enough time to introduce new safety standards and Precautionary Principle.”

Dariusz Leszczynski, Ph.D., Adjunct Professor of Biochemistry, University of Helsinki, Finland; Member of the IARC Working Group that classified cell phone radiation as possible carcinogen.

“One of the most serious environmental pollutants affecting the health of human populations and resulting in chronic illness is electrosmog.  A combination of low frequency electromagnetic fields, poor power quality, ground current and especially radio frequency and microwave radiation is making people sick.  We have enough peer-reviewed scientific studies documenting the adverse effects, which include cancers, reproductive problems and symptoms of electrohypersensitivity, for governing bodies to promote practices, devices and legislation that reduce our exposure to these frequencies.

Dr. Magda Havas, PhD, Environmental and Resource Studies, Centre for Health Studies, Trent University, Canada

Man-made electromagnetic fields impact all living organisms, acting first on the unit membrane. We must reduce our dependence on  ‘wireless’  technologies, reduce the numbers of masts (i.e., cell towers), of Wi-Fi apparatus, of cordless phones and so on, and clearly indicate, in public spaces, the intensity of the ambient electromagnetic field.”

Prof. Marie-Claire Cammaerts, PhD., Free University of Brussels, Faculty of Science, Belgium.

EMF Exposure Causes a Spike in Stress Hormones

A study out of the Department of Physiology in Columbia University, New York has found that exposure to both ELF (Extremely Low Frequency) and RF (Radio Frequency) activates the cellular stress response.

The cellular stress response is a protective mechanism that promotes the release of stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones are designed to help the body during a ‘fight or flight’ response, and even during times of famine.

While a little of these hormones are appropriate, research is finding that continually high levels of the stress hormone cortisol is linked to chronic health problems.

Shawn Talbott, PhD, FACSM, author of The Cortisol Connection, has linked the continual activation of the stress response to many health issues, including the metabolic syndrome, diabetes, osteoporosis, weight gain, as well as infertility, depression and insomnia. On weight gain, he says this, ” Stress makes a person overweight because of an excessive secretion of the stress hormone cortisol, along with a reduced secretion of key anabolic hormones, such as DHEA, testosterone and growth hormones. This combination of highly catabolic cortisol and reduced anabolic hormones causes the body to store fat, lose muscle, slow metabolic rate and increase appetite…”

While most people are looking to lower their stress hormones for health reasons through diet, exercise, supplementation and sleep, they might not realize that their continual exposure to EMF fields from their favorite gadgets is a major contributing factor to these hormones increasing.

The Columbia University study concludes:

“It is clear that in order to protect living cells, EMF safety limits must be changed from the current thermal standard, based on energy, to one based on biological responses that occur long before the threshold for thermal changes.”

INT Journal of Cancer Prevention Publishes Study Showing Cancer Incidences Higher Near Cell Towers

Several Israeli researchers, medical doctors and scientists conducted a study to determine whether or not there was an association between living near cell towers and cancer. Their findings showed that the cancer rate for those living in close proximity to cell towers was greater than the cancer rate for the general population. This study was published in the International Journal of Cancer Prevention and is currently being used by several Activist groups who are trying to stop the installation of cell towers near schools.

The purpose of the study was stated as such:

“Significant concern has been raised about possible health effects from exposure to radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic fields, especially after the rapid introduction of mobile telecommunications systems ”

“Parents are especially concerned with the possibility that children might develop cancer after exposure to the RF emissions from mobile telephone base stations erected in or near schools.”

“The aim of this study is to investigate whether there is an increased cancer risk incidence in populations, living in a small area, and exposed to RF radiation from a cell tower transmitter station.”

The study was conducted using two control groups. One group consisted of 622 people living nearby a cell tower station (within 350 meters) while the other group consisted of 1222 people whose homes were further away from the cell tower. The groups were matched according to age, work environment and overall living conditions. The group living near the cell tower had been exposed to the RF frequencies for one year at the start of the study, as this is when the tower was erected.

In the high exposure area, the study found 8 different kinds of cancer were diagnosed among the 622 participants within just one year of RF exposure. This was compared to 2 cases of cancer found within the lower RF exposure group of 1222.

The study also revealed a higher incidence of these cancers among women, rousing new questions in regards to differences in susceptibility from RF exposure that might exist due to hormones, etc.

The published study was the first to show a concrete relationship between exposure to RF frequencies and cancer in humans, as earlier studies had shown a cancer/RF correlation in lab animals.

The researchers concluded:

“The study indicates an association between increased incidence of cancer and living in proximity to a cell-phone transmitter station.’
